努力の末に届いた目標に取っておく語である: achieve an aim, a target, consensus, independence, high grades。ただ起こるだけのことには使わない。温度は30度に reach するのであって achieve するのではない。教育研究で最もよく出会う語族の成員は名詞 achievement である(achievement gap, student achievement)。
The programme achieved its stated aims within two years.
その事業は二年のうちに掲げた目標を成し遂げた。

徐々に、あるいは努力によって手に入れることを言う学術的な動詞である。知識・技能・言語・習慣・企業が目的語になる。children get language は幼く響き、children acquire language が標準の言い方であり、language acquisition がその分野の名である。日常の品物なら buy か obtain でよい。she acquired a sandwich は滑稽である。
Children acquire their first language without any formal instruction.
子どもは正規の教育を受けずに第一言語を習得する。

この一覧では異物である。AWL は administrate を見出し語に立てているが、英語が実際に使う動詞は administer である(administer a test, a drug, a programme)。administrate は administration からの逆成であってまれであり、誤りとみなす編集者も多い。語族(administration, administrative, administrator)を覚え、書くときは administer とすること。

学術英語で最も多い誤りである。affect が動詞、effect が名詞である。Rainfall affects yields であり、the effect of rainfall is large である。例外は実在するがまれで、effect change は変化をもたらすこと、心理学の名詞 affect は外から見える情動を指す。それらが必要になるまでは、動詞と名詞の分担を絶対の規則として保つこと。
Rainfall patterns strongly affect crop yields across the region.
降水の型はその地域一帯の作物の収量に強く影響を与える。

適切な
学術散文ではほぼ常に形容詞であり、方法の節では標準の和らげ語になる: an appropriate test, appropriate ethical approval, where appropriate。for か to を取る。動詞の appropriate(自分のものとして取り込む)は政治や芸術批評に属し、方法の節には属さない。違うのは最後の音節だけであり、動詞は /-eɪt/(a-PRO-pri-ayt)、形容詞は弱まった /-ət/(a-PRO-pri-ut)となって、アクセントは移らない。

help より丁寧だからではなく、型のために選ぶ語である。仕事は with を伴って、動作は in doing を伴って assist する。名詞句 with the assistance of は寄与した者を明記する言い方である。研究補助員がデータ収集を assist するような、制度的・技術的な助けに向く。人が人を助ける話や、文章がこわばるときには help を残すこと。

連れ立って現れる動詞は覚える価値がある。物事はカテゴリーに fall into し、assign to され、place in される。動詞は categorise、形容詞は categorical だが、これには注意すること。a categorical denial は分類ではなく、全面的なという意味である。複数形は categories である。

学術の文章で単独に立つことはまれで、前に修飾語が付く: the local community, the scientific community, the research community, community-based interventions, community health。生態学では術語であり、一つの生息地を共有するすべての個体群を指す。the scientific community は修辞上の一手であることに注意すること。合意があると主張する言い方なので、実際に合意があるときにだけ使うこと。
Appeals to the scientific community can imply a consensus that does not exist.
科学者共同体に訴えることは、存在しない合意をほのめかしてしまうことがある。

どの部分のことかを言うまで、読者は何も学べない。共起語を添えること: a complex relationship, interaction, system, process。complex は相互に作用する部分が多いことを、complicated は無用に入り組んでいることを示唆する。名詞は complexity である。具体的な名詞の意味も二つ分けておくこと: a housing complex, a protein complex。

二つの意味が並んでいる。学術で優勢なのは推論の意味であり(the authors conclude that the effect is small)、that 節を取って、conclude about とは決して言わない。もう一つは単に終えることで、the trial concluded in 2019, the paper concludes with three recommendations となる。名詞 conclusion は両方を担い、定型句 draw a conclusion も作る。

見出し語の形容詞は、語族の中で最も使われない成員である。実際に書くことになるのは、つなぎの副詞 consequently(=therefore)と名詞 consequence(as a consequence of, the consequences for policy)である。形容詞は硬く、名詞の前に置かれるか、consequent on/upon の型で現れる。
The drought and the consequent loss of harvest displaced thousands of families.

学術上の働きの半分は抽象的である。論証・モデル・尺度・語りを construct する。第一音節にアクセントのある名詞 construct は社会科学の要となる術語であり、測るために考案された概念を指す。知能や幸福は construct であり、construct validity は、その道具が本当にそれを測っているかを問う。

三つの分野がこの語で出会う。エネルギーと資源の使用(the building consumes less per square metre)、食事の研究(participants consumed the test meal)、そして経済学であり、そこでは consumer と consumption が働きの大半を担う。動詞よりはるかに多く必要になる名詞は consumption である。
Older buildings consume far more energy per square metre.

働きは二つある。明確に別だという意味では単独でも立ち(three distinct groups)、from で比較の相手を示すこともできる(anxiety is distinct from depression)。はっきり感じ取れるという意味では、比較の相手を取らない(a distinct advantage, a distinct possibility)。特徴的なという意味の distinctive と入れ替えないこと。名詞は distinction、動詞は distinguish between である。

動詞は必ず on を取る。the paper focuses on rural schools であって、focus to は学習者によくある誤りである。名詞は両方の前置詞を取り、a focus on は注意の向けられる先を、the focus of the study はそれが何を中心に据えるかを名指す。過去形は現代の用法では focused と書くが、s を重ねる古い綴りもイギリスの一部の出版に残っている。複数形 foci は専門的な文章で使われ、それ以外では focuses が無難である。

学生にとって重要な意味は一つだけである。研究が公表される査読つきの定期刊行物である。仕事は雑誌に掲載され、そのとき前置詞は in を取る。雑誌には impact factor があり、a journal article は編著の一章や学会発表論文とは別の類型である。日記の意味も存在するが、学術的な文の中では読者を誤らせる。

tactics とは範囲と時間の尺度で分けられる。strategy が方向を定め、tactics がそれを実行する。教育学と心理学は心の働きについてこの語を使い(learning strategies, coping strategies, reading strategies)、学生の大半はそこで出会う。形容詞は strategic、複数形は strategies である。

学術的な意味は二つ目のほうである。tradition とは、自分の仕事を置くことのできる確立した思考の系譜であり、the empiricist tradition や a long tradition of research on this question のように使う。受け継がれた慣習という日常の意味が一つ目である。traditional はふつう、近代的なもの、実験的なものとの対比を暗に含むので、承知のうえで使うこと。
