Everything you need for your first session

  • Free, with monthly AI credits

Decks, cards and learning are free and unlimited, with no paywall. AI-written cards, filled-in details and Ask AI use credits from a free allowance that refills every 30 days. Running out never stops you studying.

AI features draw on a free allowance that refills every 30 days; when it runs out, AI writing pauses until it refills, and learning carries on.

  • Earn credits by giving feedback

Write a few sentences of genuine feedback about Vocards and receive extra AI credits, once per calendar month. Very short or unreadable submissions are turned down with a reason.

Once per calendar month, and low-effort submissions are declined.

    • Android
  • 48 languages, any pairing

Every supported language works both as the one you learn and the one you already speak, in any combination.

Persian and Uzbek have no audio.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • One-language definition decks

Pick the same language on both sides and the deck uses definitions instead of translations, with each example sentence restated in simpler words.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Use the app in your language

The interface is available in 13 languages, including Arabic with a right-to-left layout.

Terms and Privacy are English-only, and the browser extension does not offer Arabic yet.

    • iOS
    • Android
    • Chrome extension
  • Ready-made vocabulary packs

Start from a ready-made pack sorted by topic and CEFR level, browse its word list, then add it as a deck in one tap. Nearly all packs teach English; most other languages have none yet.

Nearly all packs teach English, and most other learning languages have no packs yet.

  • Try a deck before signing up

Browse the public catalog of free decks by language and topic, and play a short preview round in the browser, with audio, before you create an account.

Capture vocabulary from anywhere

A topic, a photo, your book highlights, a word you just read – turn any of it into cards

  • Build a deck from a topic

Describe what you want to learn, like “travel phrases for Japan”, pick a CEFR level and how many cards, and Vocards writes the deck. Cards appear as they are written. Uses AI credits.

  • Make cards from a document

Attach a .txt, .csv, .md or .docx file next to a topic description and the cards are drawn from its text. Each request takes one file, either a document or a photo.

One file per request: a document or a photo, not both.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Import a word list

Paste a list or upload a .txt, .csv, .tsv or .md file and check how each line was split before anything is added. A plain import uses no credits; AI can fill in missing details afterwards.

  • Type one word, get a card

Enter a word or phrase and the translation, examples, part of speech, register and audio are filled in. An inflected word comes back in dictionary form, and a whole sentence is kept as you wrote it.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Chrome extension
  • Catch typos before adding

When you type a word, a free check spots a likely typo and offers the word you probably meant, or two readings when it is ambiguous. You can always add what you typed.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Write cards yourself

Fill in every field by hand: front, back, examples, part of speech, register and context. Ask AI for just a translation or an example when you want help, and mark the word to hide for gap-fill.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Get more cards for a deck

Ask for more cards and Vocards suggests words that fit the deck's topic and what is already in it. Add optional instructions and choose how many; new cards go straight into the deck.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Save words from web pages

With the Chrome extension, right-click a word, press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+V or open the popup to make a card with its sentence as context. An optional highlight bubble opens the popup pre-filled; it is off until you turn it on.

The highlight bubble is off by default, and clicking it opens the popup pre-filled rather than adding the word in one click.

  • Save words from any app

Select text in a browser, chat or e-reader and share it to Vocards to make a card. Pick or search a deck, or create one, on the share screen. On Android, “+ Vocards” also appears in the text menu.

  • Import Kindle and Play Books highlights

Turn book highlights into cards: Kindle through the Chrome extension, Google Play Books through the extension, an exported .docx or a shared Drive link. Choose highlights and a deck, as plain text or with AI.

Bulk Kindle import needs the Chrome extension (single highlights can be shared from the Kindle app), and chapter names come through from Play Books only.

  • Pause, retry and refresh imports

Follow a book import as it runs, stop it and continue later, and retry highlights that failed. Highlights past one batch go into the same deck with one tap, and a Drive link import can be refreshed for new ones.

Refreshing for new highlights works for Google Play Books imports added by a Drive link; Kindle highlights reach Vocards through the Chrome extension.

    • Web

    • Android
  • Add a word from anywhere

An Add button opens a one-word sheet with your last deck already picked, or a list of every way to add words. It sits on every page of the web app and on Home and Decks in the mobile app.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Cards with examples and audio

A generated card has the word in dictionary form, a translation or definition, example sentences with translations, part of speech, register, usage context and audio on both sides, except in Persian and Uzbek.

Persian and Uzbek cards have no audio.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
    • Chrome extension
  • Cards generate in the background

Cards are written in small batches and stream into the deck while you carry on, with live progress. If your credits run out, writing pauses, keeps every card made so far, and resumes when you choose.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Warning when a word exists

Add a word that is already in the deck, even one you took out of learning, and Vocards tells you and links straight to the existing card.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Fill in missing translations and details

For cards that arrived bare, from a plain import or a quick manual add, fill in missing translations or add part of speech, register, context and examples, for one card or many at once.

Learning that sticks

Swipe through focused sessions and let spaced repetition do the rest

  • A session takes a few minutes

A session is a small set of 10 cards by default, or 5 to 100 if you prefer, that you work through until it is empty. Due cards come first, then new ones, and the study day rolls over at 4 AM, not midnight.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Swipe through flashcards

Tap to flip a card, swipe right if you knew it and left if you didn't. The answer that schedules a card is always given on a flashcard; other exercise types appear when a card comes back.

The answer that schedules a card is always a flashcard; quizzes and gap-fill appear on cards coming back in a session, on extra cards that are not due, and in practice rounds.

  • Multiple-choice questions

Pick the right translation from a set of options. Multiple choice appears on cards coming back later in a session, on extra cards that are not due yet, and in practice rounds, and a wrong answer never counts against you.

Never the answer that schedules a card: it appears on repeat and extra cards in a session and in practice rounds.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Fill the gap in a sentence

Complete a real example sentence with the missing word, using the card's own examples. Gap-fill appears on repeat and extra cards in a session and in practice rounds, and never counts against you.

Needs a card with an example sentence, and appears on repeat and extra cards in a session or in practice rounds.

  • Type the answer from memory

Type the word yourself, or tap letter tiles, with a hint, near-miss feedback and an “I was right” override. Offered for short answers, and not for Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Arabic, Hebrew or Persian.

Not offered when learning Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Arabic, Hebrew or Persian, and elsewhere only for answers of up to two words and 24 characters.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • No self-grading buttons

There are no Again, Hard, Good or Easy buttons to judge yourself with. The schedule is worked out from how you answer flashcards, and a wrong quiz or gap-fill answer never counts against you.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Six levels of spaced repetition

Each card climbs from Learning through Familiar, Confident and Strong to Mastered, coming back after a longer gap each time you remember it and dropping to Learning when you miss it. An in-app explainer shows how.

  • Undo an answer, fix a card

Undo your last answer and the card comes back, or open the full card editor in the middle of a session and carry on once you save.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Rebindable keyboard shortcuts

Run a whole web session from the keyboard and rebind any key, with a warning when two actions clash and a reset to defaults.

  • Pick up an unfinished session

Unfinished sessions wait on Home with your progress. Pick up where you left off or end the session, and the answers you already gave are kept.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Review a whole language at once

Start one session across your active decks in a language pair, so all your Spanish is reviewed at once instead of deck by deck. A mixed session covers up to 50 decks.

Up to 50 decks per mixed session.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • See what changed after each session

After a session, see which cards were easy, tough or lapsed, tap a group for its words, and check exactly which words moved up a level. Keep practicing starts a new session when the deck has more cards.

Keep practicing starts a regular session: any due or new cards in it are scheduled as usual.

  • Study when nothing is due

Nothing due? Review Anyway starts a session on the deck regardless. Cards that are not due run as practice and keep their schedule; anything due or new is graded as usual.

Due and new cards in the session are still graded and scheduled.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Practice rounds off the schedule

Drill typing, multiple choice, gap-fill or a mix in rounds of the size you choose. Practice answers never change a card's level or next review.

  • Hear words and examples spoken

Play the pronunciation of the word, its translation and the example sentences, have the word and translation play on their own, and set the speed. Every language has audio except Persian and Uzbek.

Persian and Uzbek have no audio yet, and a few languages use a simpler standard voice.

  • See how each word is said

A card can show how its word sounds right on its play button – in your own language's letters or in IPA. Choose which in How to say it, and correct or hide it on any card.

For words and two-word phrases in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese. The IPA is written by AI and can be wrong, so you can correct it. Adding it to older cards uses AI credits.

  • Readings for Japanese and Chinese

Japanese, Chinese and Cantonese cards show furigana, pinyin or Jyutping above the characters once you reveal the answer. New AI cards come with one, older cards can get them in bulk, and you can edit any reading.

Only for Japanese, Chinese and Cantonese. Adding readings to older cards uses AI credits.

  • Listen hands-free with Podcast Mode

In the mobile app, turn a deck into a listening session: it speaks one side, pauses so you can recall, then speaks the other. It is listening only and never changes your schedule. Needs a connection to start.

Mobile app only, and it cannot be started offline, even for a deck whose audio is downloaded.

  • Daily streaks with a grace day

A day counts once you study at least five different cards the schedule asked for, or that you chose with Review Anyway. Your streak survives if you studied today or yesterday, and the streak panel shows current and longest streaks.

Extra cards added to fill out a short session don't count toward the day.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Rest days protect your streak

Earn up to three rest days by studying. Miss a day with one in hand and it is used automatically, so your streak carries on. A rest day covers a single missed day, never two in a row.

  • Streak celebrations that grow

Your streak's flame changes as the run gets longer, with a celebration on milestone days, a chime you can switch off, and replay and mute controls.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Stats and a learning heatmap

See a year of study as a heatmap you can filter by deck, or as a monthly calendar, with your streak and total days studied. The mobile app adds 30-day and weekday charts.

  • See which words moved up

Level history lists which words moved up or down and when, and a “Moved up today” card on Home names the words that climbed today.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Host a live vocabulary quiz

Turn a deck into a quiz everyone plays on their own phone. Players join by link, QR code or room code with just a nickname. In beta: if the host leaves the game stalls, and a reload costs a player their seat.

In beta: a host who leaves mid-game stalls the room, and a player who reloads the page rejoins under a new name with a score of zero.

Organize and share

Keep your decks in order, ask about a card, and pass decks on with a link

  • Create and manage decks

Create, rename or delete a deck, with undo after deleting. Each deck has a name, description and language pair; the CEFR level you pick when generating is not saved on the deck.

The CEFR level is used only while generating and is not stored on the deck.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Pause a deck, keep its progress

Take a deck out of rotation and it stops appearing on Home while keeping all its progress. Turn it back on any time, for one deck or several at once.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Nested folders with colors

Group decks into colored folders, up to five levels deep. Deleting a folder moves its decks and subfolders up a level instead of deleting them.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Tag decks and filter by tag

Create colored tags, add them to decks and filter your library by tag, including an Untagged view. Rename, recolor or delete tags from one screen.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Search, sort and filter decks

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Find and filter cards

Search a deck's cards and filter by level, by cards you haven't seen yet, by cards missing a translation, or by cards you took out of learning. Each card shows when it is next due.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Edit any card yourself

Every card in your decks opens in the same editor: change the word, its translation, pronunciation, examples and details by hand, then save. AI can redo the pronunciation, translate or write an example when you ask, but nothing needs it.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Move or copy cards between decks

Select cards and move, copy or delete them in bulk, between decks with the same language pair. A copy keeps the examples, part of speech, register and context, and starts with a fresh schedule.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Take a card out of learning

Choose “Don't show again” during a session to stop seeing a card without deleting it, and bring it back later from the deck's discarded list.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Clean up duplicate words

Vocards finds words that appear more than once in your decks for the same language pair and proposes which copy to keep, usually the one you know best. Discard the rest in one go or review each word.

    • Web
    • iOS
    • Android
  • Ask AI about a card

Ask anything about a card, such as grammar, usage or a memory trick, or have AI check it. A suggested fix targets one field and you apply it with one tap. Each question uses AI credits.

  • Share a deck with a link

Share a deck by link: anyone can open it without an account and copy it to their library with every card's details. Stop sharing any time. Shared decks are reached only through the link.
