Move, copy or hide cards
You'll have cards in the deck you want them in, either moved with their learning progress or copied as fresh cards, and any card you don't want to study out of your sessions until you bring it back.
What you need
- A deck with cards.
- To move or copy, a second deck with the same two languages. You can also create one while you move or copy the cards.
- On iOS and Android, an internet connection for moving, copying and restoring cards. Hiding a card during a session works offline too.
Move or copy one card
- Open the deck.
- Open the card's More options menu (the three dots on the card).
- Choose Move to... or Copy to....
- Pick the deck, as in "Pick the deck" below.
On iOS and Android: tap the three dots on the card, or press and hold the card, to open the same menu.
Move or copy many cards at once
- On the deck page, click Select above the card list. You can also choose Select in a card's More options menu, which starts with that card ticked.
- Click each card you want. A bar at the bottom shows how many are selected.
- To take every card in the list, click Select All. It selects the cards the list is showing, so search or pick a level first to narrow it down.
- Click Move or Copy in the bar.
- Pick the deck.
Cancel leaves selection mode.
On iOS and Android: tap Select next to the card list heading. The count and Cancel are at the top of the screen, and Select All, Copy, Move and Delete are in the bar at the bottom.
Pick the deck
A window titled Move to... or Copy to... lists your other decks with the same two languages. Active decks come first, then paused ones marked Paused. Type in the search field to find a deck by name. Click a deck and the cards go there.
To put the cards in a new deck:
- Click Create New Deck at the top of the list.
- Type a name into Deck Name.
- Click Create, or press Enter.
The new deck gets the same two languages, and the cards go into it straight away.
When it's done, a message says Cards moved or Cards copied (Card moved or Card copied for one card), with a link to the deck they went to.
On iOS and Android: the new deck's name field reads Deck Title, and paused decks are listed under Inactive decks, marked Inactive.
What moving keeps and what copying resets
| Move | Copy | |
|---|---|---|
| Front, back and example sentences | Kept | Copied |
| Part of speech, register and context | Kept | Copied |
| Level and next review date | Kept | The copy starts at Unseen, as a new card |
| Hidden with Don't show again | Stays hidden | The copy isn't hidden |
| The original card | Leaves this deck | Stays where it was |
Move when you're reorganizing. Copy when you want the same words in a second deck and don't mind learning them there from the start.
Hide a card during a session
If a card keeps coming up and you don't want to study it, click Don't show again between Not yet and Got it! on a flashcard. With a keyboard, H does the same unless you've changed the shortcut.
- The card leaves the session, and a message says Card removed from learning. Click Undo on that message to put it back into the session.
- If it was the last card, the session ends. To change your mind, restore the card from the deck page.
- The card stays in its deck with its level and next review date. It's left out of your sessions and practice rounds until you restore it.
- After you hide a card, you can't undo the answer you gave before it.
The button is only on flashcards. Multiple choice, gap-fill and typing don't have it.
On iOS and Android: the button sits between Not yet and Got it!. It works offline, and the card is hidden on your other devices once the phone is back online.
The deck page doesn't have a hide option. Outside a session, the only other way to hide a card is to discard a copy in the duplicate words review below.
Note: In a learner's very first session, the button is hidden while Vocards coaches the first cards.
Keep one copy of a word that's in several decks
If you add the same word to two decks with the same two languages, each copy is scheduled on its own, so you study the word twice. Vocards spots this across your whole library. Two cards count as copies when their fronts match; the backs only decide how sure the review is that one can go.
- On My Decks, a banner says how many words appear more than once. Click Review. If you dismissed the banner, use the duplicate words link next to the sorting options (under the deck list on a narrow screen).
- Duplicate words opens. Under Same word, each word is ticked, and the copy you've practiced most is the one kept. Click another copy to keep that one instead.
- Words under Same spelling, different translations may be two different words, so they stay unticked unless you tick them.
- Click the discard button at the bottom, then Discard to confirm. The other copies move to each deck's Discarded list, and the message that follows has Undo.
To keep every copy of a word, click Keep all, don't ask again on it. Delete instead… deletes the copies for good, with their review history, and has no undo.
On iOS and Android: the banner is on the Decks tab, and Find duplicate words at the end of the deck list opens the same review.
Bring a hidden card back
- Open the deck the card is in.
- Click Discarded next to the level filters. It only appears when the deck has hidden cards, and it shows how many.
- Click Restore on the card.
The card leaves the list and a message says Card restored. It comes back into your sessions with its level and next review date as they were.
In the Discarded view you can still edit, move, copy or delete a hidden card. Click Discarded again to go back to the other cards. If a card you never hid is missing from your sessions, see Why a card doesn't show up.
On iOS and Android: tap Discarded above the cards, then Restore on the card. Restore is also in the card's menu. It only shows while you're online.
Turn off the Don't show again button
If you keep pressing it by accident, switch off “Don't show again” button in the learning settings. It's on until you change it. On web, the H shortcut goes with it. Change your learning settings shows where to find it.
Cards you hid before stay hidden. Restore them from the deck page as above.
Limits
- Up to 1,000 cards per move, copy or delete. In a longer list, Select All ticks the first 1,000 and shows "You can act on up to 1,000 cards at once."
- Cards only go to a deck with the same two languages. A deck's languages can't be changed after you create it, so a card can't reach a deck for another language. To learn the word there, add it to that deck as a new card.
- Selections stay inside one deck. Open each deck to move its cards.
