Host a live vocabulary quiz with friends
You open a quiz room from one of your decks and send people a link. Everyone answers the same question on their own phone or computer, the room sees the right answer together, and a scoreboard keeps track. Players type a nickname to join. They don't need an account or the app.
The quiz is a game. Answers in it don't change when your cards come back for review.
What you need
- A Vocards account, signed in on the web or in the app on iPhone or Android. Only the host needs one.
- A deck with at least four finished cards, meaning cards that have a back. Wrong answers are drawn from the same deck, so a smaller deck can't make a question. Cards you've hidden aren't used. You can also have Vocards write a deck for the quiz, which uses AI credits (step 2).
- Players need a phone or computer with a web browser, or the Vocards app, and a connection.
1. Open the quiz setup
On the web, go to Practice from the page menu at the top left, or open /practice. Under Play together, click Start a quiz.
Note: On iOS and Android, tap the Practice tab, then Start a quiz under Play together.
2. Pick where the questions come from
Under Where the questions come from, choose a source.
- One of my decks: pick one of your decks. Decks with fewer than four finished cards aren't offered, and a line under the picker says how many were left out.
- Describe a topic: type a topic, choose the two languages, and press Generate the words. Vocards writes a new deck with as many cards as you set under Questions, and the deck stays in your decks afterward, the same as one from Build a vocabulary deck from a topic. When it's ready, press Use this deck, or Start over to try a different topic.
Writing a deck from a topic uses AI credits, and a note above the button says so. Every account gets 500 free every 30 days, and the cost depends on the AI processing the deck actually needs. A quiz from a deck you already have uses no credits. See Check your AI credits and what uses them.
3. Set up the game
- Questions: how many questions the whole game has, from 1 to 30. It starts at 10.
- Questions per round: where the game stops to show the scoreboard. With 20 questions and 10 per round, you play two rounds. The line under the steppers says how many rounds you'll get.
- Question types: all three start switched on, and the game mixes them in random order. Keep at least one. With Pick the meaning, players see a word and choose what it means. With Pick the word, they see the meaning and choose the word. With Fill in the gap, they see a sentence with a gap and choose the missing word; this needs cards with example sentences, and cards without one get a different question type instead.
- Speed bonus: off by default, so every right answer is worth the same. Turn it on to give quicker right answers a few extra points.
Press Create the room.
If you asked for gap-fill questions and the deck has no example sentences, the lobby tells you those questions were skipped. If the deck turns out too small, the lobby says so before anyone has started.
4. Invite players
The lobby shows the join link, a six-character room code and a QR code. People in the same room as your screen can scan the QR code.
To reach people elsewhere:
- Copy link copies the join link for a group chat or a video call.
- Share opens your device's share menu. It appears only where the browser has one.
- Share QR code sends the QR code as a picture. Where the browser can't share files, the button reads Download QR code and saves the picture instead.
Note: On iOS and Android, the lobby has Copy link, Share and Share QR code, which always opens the phone's share sheet.
Names appear under In the room as people join. You're in the list too, shown as "Host". To take someone out before the game starts, press Remove next to their name. They can't come back under that name.
5. How players join
A player opens the link or scans the QR code, types a nickname of up to 24 characters, and presses Join the quiz.
Someone who has the code but no link goes to /q on the Vocards site, types the code and presses Continue. Signed-in users also find Join a quiz on Practice. The code isn't case-sensitive. On the setup page, I have a code at the top leads to the same place.
Players who are signed in to Vocards in the same browser or app when they join are recognized automatically. That's what lets them save their missed words at the end (step 7).
People can join after the game has started. They're told first, and they come in at the current question. Questions before that score nothing for them.
6. Run the game
Press Start the round when everyone's in. You play along on the same screen.
Each question has four answers. A question is revealed to everyone at once, when one of these happens first:
- every connected player has answered,
- you press Reveal now,
- 60 seconds pass. Nothing on screen counts down to this. It stops a room from waiting forever on someone who put their phone down.
An answer can't be changed once it's picked. After you pick yours, the line under the answers counts how many players have answered, which helps you decide when to press Reveal now.
After the reveal, press Next question. On the last question of a round the button reads Finish the round, and everyone sees the scoreboard. Press Next round to go on, or Finish the quiz to end the game there. After the last round, only Finish the quiz is offered.
Keep your screen open until you've pressed Finish the quiz. Only you can move the game on, and leaving doesn't end it: the players are left waiting on the current question, and nobody gets the results or can save words. To stop early, play to the end of the current round, then press Finish the quiz on the scoreboard. On the web, a reload puts you back in the room.
Scoring:
- A right answer is worth 100 points. A wrong answer or no answer scores 0, so guessing never costs anything.
- With Speed bonus on, a right answer earns up to 25 extra points, fewer the longer it took. After 60 seconds there's no bonus left.
- Players on the same score share a place.
A round never has more questions than the deck has cards. Each later round uses words the room hasn't seen yet, so when only a few are left, that round is shorter. Once every word has been asked, the remaining rounds repeat words.
The quiz plays sounds. Use the speaker button at the top of the screen (Mute sounds) to silence your device.
7. At the end
After Finish the quiz, everyone sees That's a wrap: the winner, the final scoreboard with each player's points and right answers, and every question again with who picked what.
Under Keep these words, a signed-in player can press Build my deck. The words they got wrong or didn't answer become a new deck called "Words from the quiz", with the same language pair as the quiz deck. The cards start fresh, with no progress. A player who got everything right has nothing to save. Before you open the room, the setup page tells you that players can save the words they missed, because those words come from your deck.
Players who joined without signing in can see the results but can't save the words. Their results card still suggests creating an account, but an account made afterward can't save words from this game. A player who wants the deck should sign in before joining.
As the host, press Close to leave the results.
Limits
- Up to 30 people per room, including you. People who lost their connection still count, and so do seats left behind by a reload.
- Up to 30 questions per game.
- A room closes 6 hours after you create it, and nobody can join after that.
- You can open up to 20 rooms an hour. Past that, Create the room shows Something went wrong.
- Joining is limited per network: 60 requests in 5 minutes from one internet connection. Opening the join page counts once and joining counts again, so each player uses at least two.
- Only the host's own decks can be used.
Playing with a class
- A school network often reaches the internet as one connection, so a full class on the same Wi-Fi can use up the 60 requests. If players see Too many tries. Wait a moment., ask a few of them to join over mobile data, or wait up to five minutes.
- Ask players not to reload or close the quiz page. A reloaded page can't get back into its seat. The player has to join again under a new name and starts from 0 points, while the old seat keeps a place in the room. In the lobby, press Remove on the old name to free that place.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| We can't find that room | The code is mistyped, or the room never existed. | Check the code with the host, or ask for the link. |
| That room has closed | The host finished the game, the last round is over, or 6 hours have passed. | Ask the host to open a new room. |
| That room is full | 30 people are already in the room. | In the lobby, the host can remove a name nobody is using, such as an old seat left by a reload. Once the game has started, nobody can be removed, so the host opens a second room. |
| Somebody already has that name | Someone in the room has that name, in any mix of capitals. This also happens if you reload the page: your old seat keeps the name and its points. | Pick a different name. |
| Too many tries. Wait a moment. | Too many join attempts from one network, which can happen when a whole class joins on the same Wi-Fi. | Wait up to five minutes, then press Try again, or join over mobile data. |
| The host removed you from this quiz | The host removed you, and the name is blocked in that room. | Talk to the host. |
| Reconnecting… or Still trying to reconnect | Your connection dropped. Your place is kept, but the room doesn't wait for you, and questions revealed meanwhile score 0. | Check your connection. When Try again appears, press it. Keep the page open. |
| A deck is missing from the picker | It has fewer than four finished cards. | Add cards or fill in the empty backs, or pick Describe a topic. |
| Players stuck on a question after the host left | Leaving the host screen doesn't end the game. Questions still reveal after 60 seconds, but only the host can move on. | On the web, the host goes back to the room's page (the browser's Back button or history has it) and is put back in the room. Play to the end of the round, then press Finish the quiz. On iOS and Android, a room the host has left can't be reopened, so open a new room and send the new link. |
