Import your Kindle highlights into flashcards
You'll get a deck with one card per highlight from a Kindle book, either the highlight text as it is or a card filled in with AI. When you highlight more in the same book, you can import it again to add the new ones.
What you need
- A computer with Chrome. Kindle only lets a computer read your notebook, so a whole book can't be imported from a phone. The Kindle app can send one highlight at a time, which is covered under On your phone below.
- The Vocards extension. In Vocards, open Import, then Highlights from your e-books, then Kindle. The Browser extension card there has the link: Install the extension.
- A Vocards account, signed in on the web in that same browser. The import finishes on a Vocards page that needs you signed in.
- An Amazon account with the book in your Kindle library, and highlights in it.
- AI credits, only if you choose AI-enhanced. Every account gets 500 free every 30 days. Text only uses none.
1. Open your Kindle notebook
Go to read.amazon.com/notebook and sign in to Amazon. If you buy from another Amazon store, use that store's notebook instead: read.amazon.co.uk, read.amazon.ca, read.amazon.com.au, read.amazon.in, read.amazon.co.jp, leer.amazon.es, leer.amazon.com.mx, lire.amazon.fr, lesen.amazon.de, leggi.amazon.it, ler.amazon.com.br or lezen.amazon.nl, each followed by /notebook.
You can also click the Vocards icon in Chrome's toolbar and, under Import highlights , click Kindle . It opens the notebook in a new tab.
2. Open the book and click Import highlights
- In the notebook, pick the book from the list of your books.
- A Vocards panel sits in the bottom-right corner of the page, titled Import highlights to Vocards . Click its Import highlights button.
- The button reads Importing… while the extension reads the page. Then a new tab opens in Vocards on Import from Kindle, with the book's highlights listed.
The extension reads the highlights from the page you have open and sends them only to your Vocards account.
Note: If you closed the panel, the same Import highlights button is on the Kindle card in the extension's toolbar popup while the notebook is open. The popup asks you to sign in to the extension first, and to have at least one deck.
3. Check the highlights
The page shows the book's title and author, and how many highlights it found. Below that:
- One button per highlight color, with a count. Click one to hide that color. Hidden highlights aren't imported. Click it again to bring them back.
- The list, grouped by color. On Kindle every highlight sits under Other, because the notebook doesn't give chapters to the extension. A page number shows under a highlight when the notebook has one.
- A tick box on every row. Click a row to tick or untick it. Select all ticks every highlight in the colors you can see. Deselect all unticks them all.
If the book has more than 1,000 highlights, the first 1,000 are ticked and the page says, for example: "This book has 1400 highlights. The first 1000 are selected – import them, then bring in the rest in one click." Leave the selection as it is. Step 7 brings in the rest.
4. Choose the deck
Under Target deck, pick one:
- Create new deck is selected at first. Deck Name is filled in with the book's title, and you can change it. I speak and I'm learning both start as Select a language. Under I'm learning, pick the language the book is written in.
- From a previous import lists decks you've filled from a book before. It only shows up once you've imported one. A deck that came from this book is marked This book.
- Pick any deck puts the cards into any deck you already have, with that deck's languages.
Vocards asks for the languages because it can't tell them from the book. In AI-enhanced mode this matters most: every highlight is treated as written in the deck's I'm learning language, and a wrong choice there turns the cards into the wrong language.
If you've imported this book before, the page picks From a previous import and that deck for you. Add new highlights later, below, explains what changes.
5. Choose the import mode
Under Import mode:
- Text only puts each highlight on the front of a card as it is, with nothing on the back. It uses no credits.
- AI-enhanced writes each card with AI: a translation, example sentences and details. It uses AI credits. If you have none left, the import won't start.
Text only is selected the first time. After that, the page remembers what you picked last in this browser.
6. Import
Click the button at the bottom. It shows how many highlights are ticked, for example Import 1000 highlights . It stays grayed out until at least one highlight is ticked and, for a new deck, the name and both languages are filled in.
Importing highlights shows a running count, such as "240 of 1000". While it runs:
- You can leave the page. Vocards asks first, and the import carries on without the progress view. The E-book highlights page shows Import in progress and takes you back to it.
- Stop import ends it. Cards added so far are kept. In Text only mode it stops at once. In AI-enhanced mode it asks first.
After a stop, Import stopped offers Continue import. It takes you back to the list with the same deck chosen. Check that the highlights already added are marked Already imported and unticked before you import again. If they aren't, which happens when the stopped import went in through Pick any deck or the step 7 button, don't import from that list. Run step 2 again instead: the page picks the same deck and marks what's already in it. Do the same if the page was reloaded in between, because Continue import then starts over. Fix an e-book import that paused, stopped or partly failed has more on stopped imports.
7. Bring in the rest
When it's done you see Import complete and how many cards were added. If any of the book's highlights weren't in this import, a button offers them, for example Import the remaining 400 highlights . They go into the same deck, with no second deck and no language question. The button counts every highlight you left out, including ones you unticked or hid by color, up to 1,000 at a time. Click it again after that import if there are still more.
What you'll see
Go to deck opens the deck.
- AI-enhanced: each card has a translation and example sentences. The front is written by AI from your highlight, so it may not match the highlight word for word.
- Text only: each card has the highlight on the front and an empty back. Cards without a back stay out of study sessions until they have one. Type a translation into a card yourself, or use Complete backs on the deck page, which fills them with AI and uses credits.
Add new highlights later
When you've highlighted more in the same book, open it in the notebook again and click Import highlights as in step 2. The page picks From a previous import and the deck this book went into. For Kindle this is the only way to add new highlights.
Vocards compares the book with the most recent import of it into that deck, and only that one. Highlights from that import are marked Already imported and start unticked. A box above the book says how many aren't marked, with two buttons:
- Quick refresh – add 12 imports every highlight that isn't marked, whatever is ticked or hidden below.
- Review first closes the box so you can go through the list first. The button at the bottom then reads Refresh – add 12 new .
If the book came in with a single import, the count is right the first time you come back. After that, check it before you click. Each refresh is an import of its own, and so are Continue import and the step 7 button. Highlights that came in before the most recent one show up as new again, and importing them gives you a second card for each. If the count is higher than what you've highlighted since, choose Review first, click Deselect all and tick only the new highlights.
If the book has more than 1,000 highlights, nothing is marked and the box doesn't appear, and the first 1,000 are ticked again. Click Deselect all and tick only the new ones.
When a refresh finishes, the completion screen can still offer Import the remaining 400 highlights . After a refresh that count includes highlights you already have, so click Go to deck instead.
On your phone
The Kindle app can send one highlight at a time to Vocards:
- Open the book in the Kindle app and long-press the highlight.
- Tap Share .
- Pick Vocards. On iPhone, the first time, tap More in the share sheet and turn Vocards on.
- The highlight is in Word or phrase. Check it, and edit it if the Kindle app added anything you don't want on the card.
- Under Select deck, your biggest active deck is chosen. Tap it to pick the deck for this book's language.
- Tap Add to Deck. The card is written with AI in the background, so it uses AI credits.
To get the extension's link onto your computer, open Settings, then Import, Highlights from your e-books and Kindle, and tap Send myself the link. It opens your phone's share sheet with the link.
Limits
- 1,000 highlights per import. Step 7 brings in the rest of a bigger book.
- 20 an hour, shared by Kindle and Google Play Books. Each import you start counts, and so does each Google Play Books link Vocards reads and each sync. A .docx upload counts twice, once to upload and once to read. Photos and files you attach to create cards with AI count too. The count starts again an hour after the first of them.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Open a book from the sidebar first." | The extension couldn't find an open book's highlights on the page. | Pick the book in the notebook, then click Try again . |
| "No highlights found. Select a book with highlights in the Kindle Notebook first." | The open book shows no highlights in the notebook. | Pick a book that has highlights in the notebook. |
| No Vocards panel on the Amazon page | You're not on a notebook page, or you closed the panel. Once closed, it stays hidden in that tab. | Open the notebook address from step 1, or use the button in the extension's popup. |
| The popup shows Sign in to Vocards | The extension isn't signed in. | Click Log in , or use the panel on the notebook page. |
| "You selected 1200 highlights but the maximum is 1000. Please deselect some to continue." | Select all ticked more than one import takes. | Untick until 1,000 or fewer are ticked. The rest come in at step 7. |
| The import button stays grayed out | No highlight is ticked, or a new deck is missing its name or a language. | Tick at least one highlight, and fill in Deck Name, I speak and I'm learning. |
| "You've hit a limit. Try again a bit later." | You've reached the limit of 20 an hour. See Limits. | Wait until an hour has passed since the first of them, then click the button again. |
| The same highlight twice in the deck | Vocards only checks the most recent import of the book, so an earlier highlight came in again. See Add new highlights later. | Delete the extra cards on the deck page. |
If your credits run out, the import pauses or stops, some highlights fail, or the deck is deleted, see Fix an e-book import that paused, stopped or partly failed.
