Photo to flashcards

Scan a vocabulary list into flashcards

Take a photo of a textbook page, a handwritten word list or a menu. AI picks out the vocabulary – the words you highlighted, underlined or circled first – and writes a card for each, with a translation, examples and audio pronunciation in most languages.

How to turn a photo of a word list into flashcards

  1. 1

    Take or upload the photo

In the iPhone or Android app, use the camera or pick a photo from your gallery. On the web, attach a JPEG, PNG or WebP image of up to 10 MB. One photo goes in at a time.

  2. 2

Say what to pick, if you like

Leave the note empty and the vocabulary is chosen for you, or steer it: “only the verbs”, “the food words from this menu”. Choose up to 50 cards and, for a new deck, a level.

  3. 3

Find the cards in your deck

The cards go straight into a new deck or one you already have – there is no review step first. Open the deck to edit or delete any card, then start learning.

What you get

  • Turn a photo into cards

Snap or upload a photo of a menu, textbook page, sign or handwritten list. Words you highlighted, underlined or circled come first, and a note like “only the verbs” steers what is picked.

  • Cards with examples and audio

A generated card has the word in dictionary form, a translation or definition, example sentences with translations, part of speech, register, usage context and audio on both sides, except in Persian and Uzbek.

  • Edit any card yourself

Every card in your decks opens in the same editor: change the word, its translation, pronunciation, examples and details by hand, then save. AI can redo the pronunciation, translate or write an example when you ask, but nothing needs it.

  • Free, with monthly AI credits

Decks, cards and learning are free and unlimited, with no paywall. AI-written cards, filled-in details and Ask AI use credits from a free allowance that refills every 30 days. Running out never stops you studying.

  • Apps for iPhone and Android

Use Vocards on the web, iPhone and Android with one account. Decks, cards, progress, streaks and learning settings sync across every device you sign in on.

  • Six levels of spaced repetition

Each card climbs from Learning through Familiar, Confident and Strong to Mastered, coming back after a longer gap each time you remember it and dropping to Learning when you miss it. An in-app explainer shows how.

Good to know

  • Persian and Uzbek cards have no audio.
  • AI features draw on a free allowance that refills every 30 days; when it runs out, AI writing pauses until it refills, and learning carries on.

FAQ

Any picture with words in it: a textbook page, a printed or handwritten word list, a menu, a sign. Words you highlighted, underlined or circled are picked first, and a word list keeps the same words, in dictionary form, with obvious typos fixed. A photo with no text works too – the cards name the things you can see.
