Save words while you browse, with the Chrome extension

You'll be able to add a word you meet on any web page to one of your Vocards decks without leaving the page: from the extension's popup, from the right-click menu, or from a small bubble next to the text you select.

What you need

  • A computer with Chrome. The extension is published in the Chrome Web Store.
  • A Vocards account with at least one deck. With no decks, the popup sends you to Vocards to create one.
  • AI credits, only for cards you create with AI. Every account gets 500 free every 30 days. A card is charged for the AI processing it uses, so there's no fixed price per card. A card you add yourself uses none.

The extension adds words. You study them in Vocards on the web or in the app.

1. Install the extension

In Vocards on the web, open Settings and, under Apps & devices, click Get the apps. On the Browser extension card, click Add to Chrome. The extension's Chrome Web Store page opens, where you add it to Chrome.

On a phone, or in Safari or Firefox, the card shows View in Chrome Web Store instead, which links to the same listing.

After the first install, Chrome opens a Welcome page listing the ways to add words. Click Got it to close it.

The page also has Enable the quick-add bubble . The bubble is off until you turn it on, here or later from the popup (step 5).

2. Sign in

  1. Click the Vocards icon in Chrome's toolbar. The popup shows Sign in to Vocards .
  2. Click Log in . Vocards' sign-in page opens in a new tab.
  3. Sign in there. If you're already signed in to Vocards in this browser, you skip this. Either way the page then says Extension connected, and you can close the tab.
  4. Click the Vocards icon again. The popup now shows the form for adding a word.

Signing out of Vocards on the web signs the extension out too.

3. Add a word from the popup

Click the Vocards icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+V (⌘⇧V on a Mac).

  1. Type the word under Word or phrase .
  2. Under Deck , check the deck. The popup picks the one you used last. Click it to choose another.
  3. Click Create with AI to have AI write the translation and examples. This uses AI credits. Or click Add manually to add a card with only your word on it, which you finish yourself.

Pick a deck whose learning language is the word's language. Vocards treats what you saved as a word in the deck's learning language and translates it into the other one.

To make a new deck without leaving the popup, click + New deck next to Deck . Give it a name, set its two languages and click Create .

4. Add a word with the right-click menu

  1. Select a word or phrase on the page.
  2. Right-click the selection and point to Vocards – Kindle Highlights to Flashcards , the extension's name in Chrome.
  3. Choose the item that shows your selection, for example Add "madrugada" to Vocards .
  4. The popup opens with your selection in Word or phrase and the sentence around it under Context . If it doesn't open, click the Vocards icon. Your selection is waiting there.
  5. Check the deck, then click Create with AI or Add manually .

The sentence goes with the word so AI can tell which meaning you ran into. When there's no sentence around the selection, the page's address goes instead.

5. Turn on the quick-add bubble (optional)

The bubble is a small Vocards tag that appears next to text you select. Clicking it opens the popup with the word and its sentence filled in, as the right-click menu does.

It's off until you turn it on, because it has to run on the pages you visit:

  1. Open the popup. Below the form, under Quick-add bubble , click the switch.
  2. Chrome asks whether to let the extension access the sites you visit. Allow it.

Without this permission the extension only reaches vocards.app and the Kindle and Google Play Books pages it imports highlights from. Turning the bubble off stops it from running on pages. The bubble never shows on vocards.app.

What you'll see

After Create with AI, the word appears above the form under In progress , and Chrome shows a notification. You can close the popup. While cards are being written, the Vocards icon shows how many. When a card is ready, the notification says so, the icon shows ✓, and the popup shows the card's translation and first example.

The card is in the deck you picked. Open deck opens it in Vocards. The front is written by AI from what you saved, so it may not match your text exactly. In a Japanese, Chinese or Cantonese deck, the AI also adds the word's reading (furigana, pinyin or Jyutping).

After Add manually, the button briefly reads Added! . The card has your word on the front and an empty back. Cards without a back stay out of study sessions until they have one. Type a translation into the card, or use Complete backs on the deck page, which fills them with AI and uses credits.

To study the new words, click Start Learning at the bottom of the popup. It opens Vocards in a new tab. Your first learning session walks through one.

Limits

  • Create with AI takes up to 200 characters, and so does the sentence or page address sent with it. Add manually takes up to 500 for each.
  • If a card hasn't arrived after 5 minutes, the extension stops waiting and marks it Still working .

"must be at most 200 characters" after Create with AIWhat you typed is over 200 characters, or the sentence or page address that came with your selection is. A sentence longer than 200 characters always fails: the extension shortens it to 200 and adds "…", which puts it back over the limit.Click Add manually instead. Or close the popup, click the Vocards icon and type the word yourself. A word you type in a popup you opened yourself goes without a sentence or address.
