Export your data, or delete your account
You'll have a file with your decks, cards and progress, and you'll know what happens to your account when you delete it.
What you need
- To be signed in. Both Export my data and Delete account are in Settings, in the Data & Privacy section, and that section only shows while you're signed in.
- An internet connection. On iOS and Android, both buttons show This feature is unavailable in offline mode while you're offline.
If you can't sign in any more, see If you can't sign in further down.
1. Export your data
On web, open Settings from your account menu. On iOS and Android, open the Settings tab.
- Scroll to Data & Privacy.
- Click Export my data.
On web, your browser downloads a file named like vocards-export-2026-10-01.json, with the date of the export in it.
On iOS and Android: the button reads Exporting… while the file is prepared. Then your phone's share sheet opens with the file. Pick where to keep it, for example your files or an email to yourself. Save it before you close the sheet: the export already counts, and you can't make another for 24 hours.
You can export once every 24 hours. The 24 hours count from your last export on any device.
What's in the file
The file is JSON, a plain-text format that a text editor or a spreadsheet tool can open. It holds:
- your account: email address, name and the date you joined
- how your account was created: the sign-up method, platform, app version and time zone, and the link or campaign that brought you, when one was recorded
- your settings
- every deck with its languages, and every card in it: front, back, context, examples and part of speech
- your tags
- your progress on each card: its learning status, its current interval, when it's next due and when you last reviewed it. Progress is listed by an internal card ID, and the cards in the file don't carry that ID, so you can't match a progress entry to its word.
- each AI request made for your account: what kind it was, the prompt that was sent and its date
The file doesn't include your folders, which tags are on which deck or card, deck descriptions, your session history, your imports, your Ask AI conversations, your Messages conversation or your AI credits.
2. Before you delete
Deleting signs you out everywhere, and signing back in cancels the deletion in most cases (see Changed your mind? below). So do these first, while you're still signed in.
Export your data. Exporting needs you to be signed in, so do it before you delete.
Turn off reminders on each phone. In the Settings tab, under Reminders, turn Daily reminders off. Reminders are scheduled on the phone itself, and deleting your account or signing out doesn't cancel them, so they keep arriving. Once you're signed out, the Reminders section isn't in Settings any more, so you can't turn them off in the app. See Set up daily reminders on your phone.
Decide about decks you've shared. A deck you've shared with a link can still be opened until your account is permanently deleted. To take one down now, set it to Private in its Share dialog. Copies other people already made are theirs, and they stay.
3. Delete your account
- In Settings, under Data & Privacy, click Delete account.
- The Delete your account dialog lists what goes: All decks and cards, Learning progress and session history and Account information and settings.
- Under Type DELETE to confirm, type
DELETE. The Delete account button stays off until you do. - Click Delete account.
You're signed out, and the app shows Account deleted.
The dialog, the list and the button are the same on iOS and Android.
What happens next
- Right away: your account is marked for deletion and you're signed out on every device. Nothing is erased yet. You get an email saying your account is scheduled for deletion, with the date.
- 7 days before the date: a reminder email says your account will be deleted soon.
- 30 days after you asked: your account is permanently deleted, and you get a last email saying it's done.
Permanent deletion removes your decks, cards, folders and tags, your learning progress and session history, your imports, your AI credits, your Ask AI conversations, your Messages conversation, the list of words you set aside with Keep all, don't ask again in the duplicate-words review, and the account itself. Links to decks you shared stop working.
Some records are kept with the link to your account removed. Among them are feedback you sent through the feedback form, the records of AI requests made for your account (with the prompt text), and your cookie choices.
Changed your mind?
Sign in to Vocards within the 30 days. In the app on iOS or Android, any sign-in cancels the deletion. On the web, signing in with an email link or code cancels it. You get an email confirming it, and your decks and progress are all still there.
Signing in on the web with Google or Apple doesn't cancel it on its own. After that kind of sign-in, Settings shows a banner with your deletion date. Click Cancel deletion in it, and wait for the email that confirms the deletion is canceled.
If you can't sign in
Go to vocards.app/delete-account. You don't need the app or an account to open it.
- If you're not signed in, the page offers Sign in. If you can't sign in, email a deletion request to [email protected] from the address your account uses.
- If you're signed in, the page has a Delete account button that opens the same dialog as Settings.
Signing out instead
Signing out ends your session on that device only. Your account, decks and progress stay as they are, and you can sign back in any time. On web it's Log out under Account in Settings. On iOS and Android it's Sign Out.
Note: on a phone, signing out clears what the app saved on it for offline use, including answers it hasn't sent yet. If the Settings tab shows Pending reviews, tap Sync now before you sign out. Signing out doesn't stop reminders either.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Export is available once every 24 hours | You exported in the last 24 hours, on this or another device. | Try again once 24 hours have passed. |
| On a phone, you closed the share sheet without saving, and exporting again shows Export is available once every 24 hours | The export counts when the file is made, even if you don't save it. | Try again once 24 hours have passed, and pick where to save it this time. |
| The Delete account button in the dialog stays grayed out | The confirmation field doesn't say DELETE. | Type DELETE in the field. |
| Something went wrong. Please try again. in the dialog | The request didn't go through. | Check your connection and try again. On iOS and Android the message is Something went wrong. |
| Reminders keep arriving after you deleted your account | They're scheduled on the phone, and deleting doesn't cancel them. Signing back in to turn them off would cancel the deletion. | Turn off notifications for Vocards in your phone's settings, or remove the app from the phone. |
