Ask AI about a card and apply its fix
Ask the AI about one card in a short chat, then put any change it proposes onto the card, choosing which fields change.
What you need
- A Vocards account and a card in one of your decks.
- An internet connection. Ask AI doesn't work offline.
- AI credits. Each question uses some, and the amount depends on how much AI processing the answer takes. Every account gets 500 free credits every 30 days, and credits can't be bought. How AI credits work.
1. Open Ask AI
You can open it from a deck or in the middle of a learning session.
From a deck on web: open the deck. Hover over the card's row, click the three-dot More options button that appears, then Ask AI about this card. It sits right under Edit.
During a session on web: open the More options menu at the top of the session, then Ask AI about this card. It opens for the card that's on screen.
On iOS and Android: on a deck, tap the three dots on the card's row, or press and hold the row, then tap Ask AI about this card. In a session, it's the first item in the More options menu at the top of the screen. While you're offline, a deck's card menu isn't available.
2. Ask a question
The dialog is titled Ask about this card. The card's front and back are at the top.
Tap one of the starter questions, or type your own in the Ask anything about this card… box and send it.
- Is this correct? asks the AI to check the whole card (front, back, part of speech, register, context, and each example with its translation) and to say what's fine as well as what's wrong.
- Explain the grammar
- When would I use this?
- Give me a memory trick
A starter disappears once you've asked it. On web, Enter sends and Shift+Enter starts a new line.
The AI is set up to answer in the language you use Vocards in, and to stick to this card and the language you're learning.
You can also ask for a change outright, such as "add an example" or "make it less formal". It's asked to reply with that change as a suggestion you can apply.
3. Review the suggested change
When the AI proposes a change, a Suggested change box appears under its answer. It has a one-line reason and, for each field that would change, the current text crossed out above the new text.
It can change these fields: Front, Back, Context, Part of speech, Register and Examples.
Note: For Examples, the new text is the full list of examples the card will end up with. Applying it replaces the examples the card has now.
If there's nothing to change, no box appears.
4. Apply it, or dismiss it
Every changed field has a checkbox, and all of them start ticked. Untick any field you don't want.
Click Apply. The ticked fields are written to the card, and Change applied to your card replaces the box. In a session, the card on screen shows the change straight away.
If you applied only some fields, the box stays with the rest, so you can still apply them later.
Applying a change edits the card's text only. The card keeps its level and its next review date, and applying uses no credits.
Dismiss hides the box for now. Dismissing isn't saved, so the suggestion can come back later, for example on another device.
What you'll see
The conversation stays with the card. Open Ask AI about this card on the same card later, on any of your devices, and it's still there.
To clear it, click the trash button (Start over) next to the card's front and back. It shows once there's at least one message. The conversation is cleared at once, with no confirmation and no undo. Your next question starts a new one.
Under the message box, the dialog always shows "AI can make mistakes – check anything important." and Each question uses AI credits.
Limits
- A question can be up to 500 characters and needs at least 2.
- When it answers, the AI sees the card as it is now and the last 20 messages of the conversation (each question and each answer is one message). Reopening a conversation shows its latest 50 messages.
- You can ask up to 100 questions an hour.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "You are out of AI credits." | Your credits for this 30-day window are used up. | Wait for the date next to Resets on in AI Credits: on web, the credits ring at the top of the page; on iOS and Android, in Settings. Your cards and learning keep working. |
| "Too many questions just now – try again shortly." | You've reached 100 questions in an hour. | Wait a while. A question you typed stays in the box. |
| "Could not get an answer. Try again." | The answer didn't come through. | Send the question again with the send button. A question you typed stays in the box. |
| "The AI is busy right now. Try again in a moment." | The AI service is overloaded. | Wait a moment and send again. A question you typed stays in the box. |
| "Could not load this conversation." | You're offline, or Vocards couldn't be reached. | Check your connection, then click Try again (on iOS and Android, Retry). |
| "Could not apply that change." | The change didn't save. | Try Apply again, or edit the card yourself. |
| "This conversation was started over on another device." | You cleared this conversation somewhere else while a question was on its way. | Ask again. The new question starts a fresh conversation. |
| "You need to be online to ask about a card." (iOS, Android) | The phone has no connection. The starter questions and the send button are dimmed. | Ask once you're back online. |
