Set up daily reminders on your phone

You'll get a reminder from Vocards at the times and on the days you pick.

What you need

  • The Vocards app on an iPhone or an Android phone, signed in. Reminders are in the phone app only. The web app has no reminders.
  • Permission for Vocards to send notifications.

Reminders are scheduled on the phone itself. Nothing is sent to it from a server, and each phone keeps its own reminder settings: turning them on on one phone doesn't turn them on on another.

1. Turn reminders on

  1. Open the Settings tab.
  2. Scroll to Reminders.
  3. Turn on Daily reminders.
  4. If your phone asks whether Vocards may send notifications, allow it.

The row now says when you'll hear from the app, for example "Daily at 20:00". Unless you've set a time before, you start with one reminder at 20:00 every day.

Note: You can also turn reminders on without opening Reminders. Under Streak in the same tab, Daily reminders are off has a Turn on link. Home can show a A daily reminder? card with Turn on.

The offer after a session

After a session, Vocards may offer reminders in a sheet of its own. It suggests the time of day you just studied at. You can pick Morning (08:00), Lunch (12:30) or Evening (19:00), up to six times in all, or tap Pick another time to add a time of your own. The button at the bottom names what you picked, for example "Remind me at 19:00". Not now closes the sheet, and Don't ask again stops the offer.

The times you pick in the sheet replace the ones in Settings. If your phone then says no to notifications, Vocards keeps your times. They switch on by themselves once you allow notifications for Vocards in your phone's settings.

2. Pick your times

Under Reminder times:

  • Tap a time to change it in the time picker. The list shows times in 24-hour format, such as 20:00.
  • Tap Add reminder time for another reminder. The new one starts an hour after your latest time, and you can change it. You can have up to 8.
  • To remove a time, tap the red ✕ next to it. It appears once you have more than one time.

Each time in the list sends one reminder on each day you pick.

3. Pick your days

Under Days, tap the day chips, Monday to Sunday, to turn days on or off. At least one day stays on: the last selected chip can't be turned off.

With fewer than seven days, the Daily reminders row reads, for example, "3 days a week at 08:00, 20:00".

4. Decide on the streak warning

Streak warning is a separate switch in the same section. It starts switched on.

The warning is one notification at 21:00 on a day you haven't studied, when a streak of 3 days or more is at stake. It never fires on a day that has a reminder at 19:00 or later, so with the default 20:00 reminder every day you won't get it at all.

Finishing a session in the app on this phone takes the warning down. Studying on the web or on another device doesn't reliably take it down.

When a rest day would cover the missed day, the warning says so instead of calling the streak at risk. For how streaks and rest days work, see Come back to Vocards after a break.

Turn Streak warning off if you only want the reminders you scheduled.

5. Send a test

Tap Send test notification at the bottom of the section. The app says Test notification sent, and a sample reminder arrives about two seconds later, even with Vocards open.

What you'll see

A reminder is a short line in the app's language. It may quiz you on a word from one of your decks ("What does 'madrugada' mean?"), show an example sentence with the word blanked out, say how many cards are due, or mention your streak.

  • A reminder arrives on every day and at every time you picked. It still arrives on a day with nothing due, and on a day you've already studied.
  • Words come only from decks that have cards and aren't inactive.
  • The text is fixed when the app schedules the reminder. It's refreshed the first time you open Vocards each day. If you don't open the app for a few days, you get the same text each day, and a due count in it can be out of date.
  • A reminder that arrives while you're using Vocards isn't shown.
  • Tapping a reminder opens Vocards.

To stop them, turn Daily reminders off. Every reminder and warning set on this phone is canceled.

Note: Signing out doesn't stop reminders, and one can still show a word from your decks. Turn Daily reminders off before you sign out or hand the phone to someone else. Once you're signed out, the Reminders section is hidden.
