Change how Vocards looks
Set light or dark mode, a color theme, the interface language and the app icon, and see which of these carry over to your other devices.
What you need
- Vocards on web, or the app on iOS or Android.
- The app icon can only be changed in the iOS and Android apps.

Switch between light and dark
On web, click the sun or moon button in the toolbar. It's labeled Theme when you point at it. Pick Light mode, Auto (System) or Dark mode.
Auto (System) follows your computer's light or dark setting and changes when it does.
On iOS and Android, open the Settings tab. Under App, tap Theme and pick Auto, Light or Dark.
Note: In the iOS and Android apps, Podcast Mode always uses the dark colors of your theme, in light mode too.
Pick a color theme
A color theme changes the app's colors. Each one has a light and a dark version, so it works with either mode. You pick from the themes Vocards offers. You can't make your own.
- On web, click the button with two colored dots in the toolbar. It's labeled Color Theme. In a narrow window, open Settings instead and use the Color Theme row under App.
- Type in Search themes... to narrow the list.
- Click a theme. The app changes to it and the list closes.
Click the star next to a theme to add it to Favorites. Favorites sit at the top of the list, above All themes.
On iOS and Android, tap Color under App in Settings. The list works the same way, with a star on each theme. A search box appears at the top when the list is long.
Try themes on the real app with Explore
Explore lets you see each theme on the screen you're on before you choose.
- Open the color theme list and click Explore at the top. A bar docks at the bottom of the screen.
- Step through themes with the arrow buttons, or press Shuffle for a random one. The app behind the bar changes as you go.
- Click the star on the bar to add the theme you're looking at to your favorites.
- Click Keep to use it, or Cancel to go back to the theme you had.
With a keyboard, you can also use the keys listed above the bar.
On iOS and Android, tap Explore at the top of the Color list. Swipe the bar sideways to browse, or drag it down to cancel. It has the same star, Shuffle, Cancel and Keep buttons.
Change the interface language
The interface language is the language of the app's buttons and menus. Vocards has 13: English, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, German, French, Turkish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic.
It's separate from the languages you learn. Each deck has its own I speak and I'm learning pair, and changing the interface language doesn't touch your decks.
- On web, click the flag button in the toolbar, labeled Interface language, and pick a language. It's also in Settings under App. In a narrow window, it's in the menu that opens from the menu icon.
- On iOS and Android, tap Language under App in Settings.
While you're signed in, your choice is saved to your account. Vocards on web switches to it the next time it loads, and the app uses it when you sign in on another phone.
Note: Arabic reads right to left, and the whole layout mirrors for it. On iOS and Android, switching into or out of Arabic restarts the app. You see Setting up your language while it does.
Change the app icon (iOS and Android)
- In the Settings tab, tap App icon under App.
- Tap one of the nine icons. A tick marks the one in use.
On Android, the app may close and reopen while the new icon applies.
Note: The text at the top of the App icon screen says changing the icon is available on iOS. It works on Android too.
Widget colors (iOS and Android)
Home-screen widgets have their own color style, separate from the app's theme. New widgets start on Paper. You change the style from the widget's own settings on your home screen. On iPhone and iPad, those option names are shown in English.
Reduce motion
The iOS and Android apps follow your phone's accessibility setting to reduce motion. With it on, animations jump to their end instead of playing. The change applies while the app is open.
Vocards has no text-size setting of its own.
If something goes wrong
| You see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There's no light or dark option in Settings on web | On web it's in the toolbar. | Click the sun or moon button at the top of the page. |
| Your other device still has the old color theme | The color theme is saved per browser or phone. | Pick it again on that device. Your favorites are already there. |
| "Couldn't change the app icon – update Vocards to use this one." | Usually, that icon came with an app update your installed version doesn't have yet. | Update Vocards from the App Store or Google Play, then try again. |
| After you sign in on another phone, the App icon screen ticks an icon your home screen doesn't show | Signing in shows the icon you picked on your other phone, but doesn't switch this phone's icon. Tapping the ticked icon does nothing. | Tap any other icon, then tap the one you want. |
